Cloud computing is fast emerging as the new solution to all your storage and computing needs. It is becoming
more and more appealing because of its scalability and efficient usage of resources. Each time new
technological advances have been made in the past, organisations have taken advantage of them, and the
transition to cloud computing has followed this pattern in turn.
Until the advent of cloud computing, organisations used their own resources to store and deploy content. There
were limitations to this method though because eventually, the resources would get exhausted and the
company would have to invest in additional storage solutions. Alternatively they would have to delete or archive
old content to make way for new. Either way, this was not the best solution because it required time and money
to implement these methods.
Cloud computing is an attractive alternative to storage on internal resources because it can be scaled
dynamically and also because it makes efficient use of available resources. Organisations now not only store
their data on the cloud, but store software applications too. Users connect to the c oud and use it and
applications freely.
In cloud computing resources can either be externally owned, examples of which are public storage facilities
provided by Google and Amazon or internally owned known as ‘private clouds’. Public clouds provide access to
external users and charge them on a pay-as-you-use basis.
There are several advantages to storing data and software on the cloud. The first and primary advantage is
reduction in cost. On the cloud, you have the option of using only as much data storage as you need. This
means that you do not need to invest in extra resources if it would be unnecessary to do so.
On the cloud you can also get instant software updates because the changes need to be made on the software
that is being hosted on the cloud. Consequently, users do not need to make any changes to their own
computers. This saves a lot of time that would normally be taken up in downloads and uploads.
Finally, a very important advantage is data security. As the cloud is used exclusively for data and software
storage data security always remains of paramount concern. In addition, there are backups stored in various
locations and this ensures that your data is never compromised either by hackers or through other means.
